CEO – Pascal Nizri

Global Fintech Lab(GFL): What triggered you to start Chekk?

Chekk?

Pascal: I have been in the banking world for a long time, 16-years-experience around the world in senior positions. I can see what’s happening when it comes to the regulation: it is very important for banks to collect information to make sure the economy is proper and clear, but always in a way that is not convenient to the customers. It is a challenge to find a right solution that is more effective to both banks and customers. Can we make a data-related personal mobile app, where people can own and hold their information? That is how I got the idea of the consumer part of Chekk. For banks and other companies requiring this information, could they do that in a respectful and private way? For example, before their collection, they should ask “Could I access to your information” and explain why. I think we are helping the customers, banks and the economy.

GFL: You have been many years in HSBC and also in very senior positions. Was is a tough choice to give up the comfortable life to start a startup?

Pascal: For me, it’s not about banking or non-banking. It is more about passion and idea. I know the startup world always thinks big banks are so horrible and slow. In reality, they are very nice, not just for the money. They have lots of customers, lots of great staffs and lots of funds to make the projects move forward. But it’s true that startups are very different. You need to adapt to a faster job and a smaller environment. You also need to be versatile. Maybe someday you talk to the CEO of a bank to sell him a solution and the next day you need to clean the coffee machine. But on both side, it’s the same passion and driver that make you create something you’re believing. I never had the attitude of doing a nine-to-five job when I work in a big bank, just like how I work for my own company and customers now.

GFL: What is the biggest challenge, if any, that you are facing right now on running Chekk?

Pascal: As I said, when you start up a company, you need to do everything yourself. You are the first sales guy, the manager and also the guy who cleans the toilet. It takes a lot of time and energy and you never stop. I am fine with that as I used to sleep for two hours at night for year and year. But it is still a challenge. In addition, you need to maintain the motivation not only for yourself but also for the whole team. The life of a startup is not that nice and rosy as you have seen in the movie or the newspaper. We always have the illusion that today we waste 200m dollar and tomorrow morning we will become a big star and everybody likes us and on the following day we are doing an IPO. It does not work like this. For a startup, there’s lots of hard work, lots of up and down, lots of back and forth. Sometimes when you are about to sell to a bank who asks you to describe and it moves forward, it stops for no reason, maybe just someone doesn’t like something. Some other time you think it is not going to work, trying to refocus on other banks. Suddenly the leader of that bank told you that they want the product next week. Okay Let’s move forward. There’re lots of situations like that. It’s not a linear path. That’s the case for 99.99% of the startup I know.

GFL: You said you are conservative about blockchain. What’s your opinion on Fintech and where this whole industry is going?

Pascal: First of all, I think blockchain is a very important technology that will change lots of things. I’m not going to say it does not support to work. What I want to say is that the technology is still not mature. Although lots of money and banks are looking at it, I feel the adaption of the technology is not coming that easily. The thing is that lots of the use cases about blockchain right now can actually be done without blockchain. They use blockchain simply because it’s cool and easy to raise money. Definitely blockchain will develop so much in the near future but we are not really relying on it right now. In terms of fintech, it is also a new and cool word right now. But the thing is that you always have the experience when everybody keeps talking about one thing during a period, leaving you the impression that it is really important. After that, no anyone talks about it anymore, just like it is totally forgotten. Maybe for a period it is all about blockchain and later they talk about AI instead, and then totally forget about the thing discussed before. However, it does not mean that those technologies and trends disappear. Anyway, I believe Fintech is important. Right now there’re lots of cooperation between fintech providers and banks. Banks have lots of capital and amazing people while fintech providers are usually agiler and have more great ideas. When the advantages of them are combined, you can see a brilliant future.

GFL: What is your hopes and dreams for Chekk’s future?

Pascal: I am very excited about the platform we had launched. Hopefully that can be adopted by the banks that we are talking to. I also think it will be a great success if I can enter markets in different parts of the world. I try my best to get Chekk expand, not just for money, but also for the belief that I am doing something meaningful. Nowadays, many people are taking out of the banking world as they are not providing the required information. Therefore, banks need to close their accounts, which is not a sensible way for the economy due to its inefficiency and great cost. My dream is that Chekk can offer an effective solution in many places, many banks and beyond banks in many countries.
